What does it take to build a brick wall in San Marcos?
Brick wall installation in San Marcos means building a brick garden or yard wall on its own footing, with every mortar joint filled full, so you end up with a wall whose color is part of the brick and that resists rain getting in.
Most people who call us want a wall along a property line or around a patio or garden, and if the wall has to hold soil back, that's a retaining wall and a different build. The price mostly turns on the wall's length and height, the style you choose, the brick and the cap on top, and how much digging the footing takes, while the schedule turns mostly on how the ground digs, the weather and getting the brick you pick. The estimate I write up after seeing your yard is where you'll find your own figure.
Is brick wall installation right for your home?
A fence that keeps failing
Brick won't rot or warp like boards, so it suits a yard where the fence keeps needing repairs.
A brick or older home
Brick chosen to suit your house makes the new wall look like part of the home.
A patio that needs edging
A low brick wall gives a patio, planting bed or seating area a solid, finished edge.
Wanting privacy from the street
A solid brick wall blocks the view from the street or next door where an open fence can't.
How we handle brick wall installation
We start by marking the wall's line with you, then dig the footing down to firm, undisturbed ground and pour it in concrete, with steel in it where the soil calls for it, because a wall that carries only its own weight still settles and cracks when the footing gets too little attention. A garden wall takes the weather on both faces, so we lay every course with the joints filled full, front to back, since one hollow joint lets water in and that's where decay starts. We finish with a coping along the top to shed rain, tool the joints, wash down the brick and haul away the dirt we dug out.
If you'd like stone in the mix, our stone masonry covers stone caps, piers and full stone walls that sit well beside brick. If you already have a brick wall with worn joints, brick pointing may be all it needs, and I'll tell you that before we talk about building a new one.
Pier and panel wall
Thin brick panels run between brick piers that brace them at intervals, which keeps the wall economical and fairly easy to build. It suits a long run where a full-thickness wall would cost more than it needs to.
Solid brick wall
Two layers of brick laid together and tied as one give a heavier, fuller wall. It suits a gate, an entry or a short run where the look counts most.
Low garden or seat wall
A wall around knee height edges a patio or planting bed, often with a wide cap you can sit on. It suits a yard that needs a border more than a barrier.

I come out and measure
I walk the line with you, look at the slope and the soil, and ask what you want the wall to do. The estimate I write up says what we'll build and why, so you know what you're paying for before anything starts.
We build the wall
Once you say go, we dig and set the footing, then lay the wall course by course, with me on site alongside our crew. If rain or hard digging slows us down, you'll hear it from me.
We walk it with you
When the cap is on and the brick is washed down, we walk the finished wall with you. If anything isn't right, that's the time to point it out.
Choosing the coping on a brick wall
Pick one that overhangs both sides with a drip.
Natural stone, cast stone, slate, terra cotta, metal and brick all work as coping, the cap along the top of the wall. What matters more than the material is that it sticks out past the brick on both sides with a drip, a small groove under the edge, so rain falls clear instead of running down the face.
Trade guidance also generally calls for flashing, a thin waterproof sheet, right under the coping, depending on the coping type and how much rain and freezing an area gets. I'll tell you on site which cap and detail fit your wall, and I usually steer people toward a coping that suits the house and overhangs both faces.

Brick wall questions we hear
How much does a brick wall cost in San Marcos?
Across the US, installing a brick wall usually costs about $10 to $45 per square foot, and that's a national range, not our price. Where your wall falls in it depends on the style, the brick, the footing and the cap on top. I'll give you the San Marcos figure in the estimate after I've seen your yard.
Which brick wall style works best on a sloped yard?
A pier and panel wall usually suits a slope best, because trade guidance notes it adapts easily to varying ground. The panels can step with the grade between piers, and I'll check how much your yard falls along the line before I recommend it.
How do I keep a brick wall low maintenance?
Leave the brick unpainted, because clay brick needs no paint or surface treatment and stays low upkeep for the life of the wall. Once exterior masonry is painted, most paint experts say it needs repainting every three to five years, and that's a chore bare brick never starts.
How do I plan a brick wall along my property line?
Start by knowing exactly where your line runs, which one cost guide advises before building a wall along it, so you head off trouble with a neighbor or a legal problem later. If you're not sure where it is, settle that before we dig, and talk it over with your neighbor while you're at it.
Can I use old salvaged brick for a new garden wall?
Sometimes, if it meets the SW grade, the rating for brick made to handle severe weather, which is what trade guidance asks of used brick in a garden wall. Old brick varies a lot, so bring it up when I come out and we'll talk about whether yours is likely to qualify.
Is a brick wall or a concrete block wall better for my yard?
A concrete block wall costs less per square foot than a natural clay brick wall, so block makes sense when budget leads and brick makes sense when looks do. If block is the better fit, our concrete block walls page covers that work.

Brick wall installation in San Marcos and nearby cities
A soil report for one commercial site in the area found its soil corrosive and called that typical for this part of southern California, and it advised asking a corrosion engineer how to protect buried metal at that site. So if your footing will have steel in it, ask me about it, and if your soil looks like it needs more than my eye, I'll tell you. We run into similar ground on jobs in Escondido and Vista, and we work in many of the cities around San Marcos, so just ask if yours isn't listed.
In California, the state requires a license whenever the work needs a permit of any kind or whoever does it hires workers, even on a project under $1,000, so the size of a wall alone doesn't decide who can build it. If your wall needs a permit, we check with the city or county office at the start and take care of the paperwork with you.
