What goes into a paver driveway in San Marcos?
Driveway pavers in San Marcos are concrete pavers set on a smooth bed of sand over a packed base and packed soil, held in place by edging along the sides, and you can drive on them as soon as the last one is in.
Most people call us when an old concrete or asphalt driveway has cracked, dropped at the edges or just looks worn out, and they want something that holds up and can be fixed in pieces later. The price turns on the size of the driveway, how much old surface and soil we dig out and haul away, how deep the base needs to be and which paver and pattern you pick, and the schedule turns on that same digging and base work, the weather and whether the city wants a permit for anything at the street. I'll give you your own figure in a written estimate that says what we'll do and why.
Is a paver driveway right for your home?
Cracked or sinking slab
Your concrete or asphalt driveway has cracked, heaved or dropped at the edges, and patching hasn't held.
A tired front yard
The driveway is the biggest surface in front of your house, and you want it to look finished.
Widening or reshaping
You're adding parking or redoing the front yard, so the driveway can change shape along with it.
Matching your house
You want a color or pattern that ties in with the brick, stone or stucco already on your house.
How we install driveway pavers
Most of what makes a paver driveway hold is underneath it, so we take our time on the base and the compaction before a single paver goes down. We have the underground lines marked, break out and haul off the old driveway and dig down to firm ground, then pack that soil, because loose ground under the base is what lets a driveway settle. We bring in base rock and pack it in layers, set edging along the sides so the pavers can't creep outward, smooth a thin bed of sand and lay the pavers in the pattern you picked. Last, we cut the edges clean, fill the joints and run the compactor over the top so the pavers lock together.
A driveway often comes with other work around it. If the drive cuts into a slope or the yard beside it needs holding back, we can take care of the retaining wall construction in the same job, and if the brick or stone steps, planters or front wall next to it have worn joints or loose pieces, our masonry restoration work brings them back so the whole front matches.
Standard concrete pavers
This suits most driveways, because a solid paver over a packed base handles daily parking and comes in a wide range of colors and shapes. It's the option I'd point most homeowners to unless they have a reason to go another way.
Permeable pavers
These have wider joints that let rain soak down into a deeper stone base, which can help where water sits on the driveway. They need the right ground under them and a regular sweep or vacuum to keep the joints open, so I'll look at your site before I suggest them.
Paver borders on a sound slab
If your concrete is still solid and only looks plain, a paver border or a band down the middle can dress it up without a full tear-out. It costs less than a new driveway, but it only makes sense when the slab underneath isn't cracking or sinking.
What happens when you call about driveway pavers in San Marcos?
Call or send the form
Call (760) 304-1464 or send the form with your driveway's rough size in square feet and a few photos of the surface now. We get back to you and set a time for me to come out.
I look the driveway over
I check the old surface, the slope and where water runs, and ask what you want from the new driveway. You get a written estimate that says what we'll do, what it costs and why, so you can compare it line by line with other quotes.
We sort permits and build
Once you say go, we check with the city at the start and take care of any permit paperwork with you. Then I work on site with our crew through the tear-out, the base and the paving.
We walk the finished driveway
When the joints are filled and the site is cleaned up, I walk the driveway with you and go over anything you should know about it. If something doesn't look right to you, that's the time to tell me.
Choosing a paver for your driveway
Pick a paver made for cars, then the look.
Pavers sold for patios and walkways are often thinner than the ones made for cars, and a thin paver under a turning tire can rock or crack. For a driveway we use pavers made for vehicle traffic, and I'll bring samples out so you can see the real color in your own light.
Pattern matters too. A herringbone pattern usually holds up best where cars turn and back out, because each paver is locked at an angle by its neighbors, while straight rows look clean but tend to shift under steering tires. Unless you want another look, herringbone is what I'll recommend.

Why San Marcos homeowners call Signature San Marcos Concrete & Masonry for driveway pavers
The owner comes out
I'm the one who answers the phone, looks at your driveway and writes the estimate, and I work on site with our crew while it gets built. You deal with the same person from the first call to the final walk-through.
Licensed and insured for paving
California's state licensing board treats placing paving as licensed contractor work, so it pays to hire someone who's licensed for it. We're licensed and insured.
Three years running our jobs
I started this business in San Marcos in 2023, after learning masonry on my own place and then on job sites. We're best known for careful repair work on brick and stone, and that same care goes into a driveway base.
Straight talk, then your call
I'd rather tell you a cracked slab can wait than sell you a driveway you don't need, and our work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee. When you're ready, call (760) 304-1464 or send us the form.
Driveway paver questions we hear
How much do driveway pavers cost in the San Diego area?
Paver work in the San Diego area usually costs about $10 to $29 per square foot installed. That's the going range for the market, not our price, and where your driveway lands depends on what I find when I come out and write your estimate.
How soon can I drive on new driveway pavers?
You can usually park on a new paver driveway as soon as the last paver is set, because concrete pavers can take traffic right after they're installed. That can shorten the time you're without a driveway.
Can driveway pavers be fixed if the ground shifts?
Yes, we lift out the pavers over the low spot or the buried pipe, fix what's underneath and put the same pavers back. You don't have to hunt for a match, and none of the old paving ends up hauled to the landfill.
Which San Marcos office handles permits for driveway work?
The City of San Marcos handles permits, and you apply for building permits online through the city's Clariti portal, which the city's permits page points you to. We check with the city at the start of your job and take care of any paperwork with you.
How do I make sure a paver driveway doesn't sink?
Good compaction of the soil under the base is the biggest part of it, because it keeps settling to a minimum. When you compare quotes, ask each crew how it compacts the soil, and ask whether the price includes a geotextile fabric, which is an optional layer.
What causes water problems under a paver driveway on clay soil?
Clay drains slowly, so water can sit in the base under the pavers instead of draining away. Drain pipes are recommended for pavers on clay or other slow-draining soils that carry cars, and I'll check how your ground drains before I write the estimate.
Thinking about a paver driveway?
I'll come out, look over your driveway and write up a free estimate that says what we'll do and why.
Work that often goes with a driveway
Driveway pavers and permits in San Marcos
The City of San Marcos issues engineering permits for grading, work in the public right of way, transportation and public improvements, and that list doesn't name driveway pavers, so whether your job needs one isn't settled until we ask. How much we dig out and regrade for the base, and whether we touch the curb or apron at the street, is what usually brings it up, and the city posts its right-of-way permit application and its document for radius-type driveways on its public improvements forms page. We check with the city at the start and take care of any permit paperwork with you.
A lot of the driveways we see are older concrete slabs on sloped lots, and we run into the same cracked, tired drives on jobs in Escondido and Vista. On a sloped drive we take extra care setting the grade of the base so water runs toward the street and away from the garage.
