What goes into building an outdoor kitchen in San Marcos?

Outdoor kitchen masonry in San Marcos is a concrete block island built on a reinforced concrete slab, faced with stone and topped with a countertop, so your grill and prep space sit in something solid that lasts outdoors.

Most people who call me have a patio, a grill in mind and a question about where to start. The price moves with the size and shape of the island, how many appliance openings it needs, the stone and countertop you pick, the gas and power runs and how easy it is to get material into your yard. The schedule depends mostly on the countertop, which is made off site, and on when your gas and electrical trades can come in between the block and the stone. The estimate I write tells you what we'll build and why, so you can plan around real numbers instead of guesses.

Is a masonry outdoor kitchen right for your yard?

  • A patio with no cooking spot

If you grill on a cart parked on the patio, a built island gives cooking a permanent home.

  • You've picked a built-in grill

Built-in grills drop into a counter, and a block base can be laid out to fit yours exactly.

  • A yard that hosts a crowd

If you cook for family most weekends, counter and prep space outside keeps everyone out of your kitchen.

  • You want it to last outdoors

Block, stone and a solid countertop stand up to sun and weather better than a wood frame does.

How we build outdoor kitchen masonry

I ask you to pick your grill and other appliances before we lay out the block, because every opening gets built to those sizes and a wrong guess means tearing out block later. Then we pour a reinforced concrete slab and build the base from concrete block, which masons call CMU. The vents and the gas and power runs go into the plan from the start, so the block goes up with those openings already in place. Once the block is done, your gas and electrical lines get run into place before any stone goes on, so we set that window with your trades and the stone work waits for them. After that we lay the stone veneer, a thin stone facing over the block, and the countertop goes on last.

An outdoor kitchen usually ties into more of the yard than the island itself. If the path from your back door to the grill is dirt or worn pavers, our walkway construction work gives you solid footing for carrying plates. A low brick wall installation can frame the cooking area or add seating along the edge, and stone veneer installation on a nearby wall or column ties it all back to the island.

  • Straight island

A single run suits a narrower patio or a grill that needs just a little counter on each side. It's the simplest layout to build and leaves room for a table nearby.

  • L-shaped kitchen

An L puts the grill on one leg and prep space or a side burner on the other, so you can cook and serve without crowding. It also takes the most planning for openings and utility runs.

  • Island with a bar counter

A raised counter on the outside of the island lets guests sit and talk with whoever's cooking. It adds block and countertop, so we work out the height and overhang with you at the estimate.

What happens after you call about an outdoor kitchen?

  1. Call or send the form

Call (760) 304-1464 or send the form, and tell us about your yard and the appliances you have in mind. We get back to you to set a time for me to come out.

  2. I look over your yard

I come out, walk the spot where the island will go, ask how you plan to use it and write up an estimate that says what we'll do and why. It breaks the job into its parts, so you can see what's driving the number and where a simpler choice would save money.

  3. We line up permits and trades

Once you say go, if your job needs a permit we check with the city or county office at the start and take care of the paperwork with you. We also set when your gas and electrical trades come in, so the stone goes on once their lines are in.

  4. We build and walk it together

I work on site with our crew from the slab through the countertop, and we keep your yard tidy as we go. When it's done, we walk the finished kitchen with you.

Stone veneer or brick on your outdoor kitchen

Stone veneer suits most islands, but match your house.

Stone veneer is the usual facing over a block base, because it's thin, bonds well to block and comes in enough colors to look right beside most patios. Brick makes sense when your house or garden walls are already brick and you want the kitchen to look like it belongs there.

I recommend the facing that ties to what's already on your house, since that will still look right long after any trend has passed. Bring a photo of your house front or a sample to the estimate, and we'll look at it together in daylight.

Look through these examples of masonry work, from block and stone to brick walls and walkways, to get ideas for your own backyard.

Why San Marcos homeowners call Signature San Marcos Concrete & Masonry for outdoor kitchens

  • I write your estimate myself

I'm the one who comes out, looks over your yard and writes the estimate, and then I work on site with our crew while the kitchen gets built. The person who planned your layout is the one making sure it gets built that way.

  • Based in San Marcos since 2023

I started this business here in 2023, after teaching myself on my own steps and garden walls and learning the rest on job sites. We're best known for careful brick and stone repair, and that same eye for matching goes into how your island sits next to your house.

  • Licensed and insured contractor

We're licensed and insured. I'm glad to answer questions about that before you sign anything, because it's a fair thing to ask any contractor building in your yard.

  • Straight talk about your layout

I'd rather tell you a straight run will do than sell you an L your patio doesn't need. Call (760) 304-1464 or use the form to set up a visit.

Outdoor kitchen questions we hear

How much does a masonry outdoor kitchen cost in San Marcos?

The price comes down to your layout, so I give you a number after seeing your yard instead of quoting one over the phone. The size and shape, the number of appliance openings, the facing and countertop, the gas and power runs and how hard it is to get material back there all move it. The estimate lists what we'll build and why, so you can see where the money goes.

How long does a masonry outdoor kitchen take?

One industry guide puts the masonry for a standard L-shaped outdoor kitchen at about 7 to 12 working days. The countertop is made separately and adds a 2 to 3 week lead time on top of that, so plan the whole project around that wait. Your gas and electrical trades also need their window between the block and the stone.

Who can build an outdoor kitchen in California?

California's Contractors State License Board says outdoor masonry walls built for their looks call for either a landscaping contractor or a C-29 masonry contractor, so it's fair to ask which license a contractor holds. Under state rules, even minor work under $1,000 needs a licensed contractor if it's subject to any permit or uses hired workers.

Can a landscaping contractor run gas to an outdoor barbecue in California?

Yes, when the barbecue is part of an overall landscaping project, the board says a C-27 landscaping contractor can contract for gas lines and electrical circuits. Whoever does that work, we leave the openings in the block ready for their lines.

Does a gas grill island need vents?

Plan for vents, because at least one grill maker's install guide requires cross ventilation, meaning air moves through the barbecue structure so leaking gas can't build up inside. That airflow also lets moisture dry out, so we follow the install guide for the grill you choose.

What causes white marks on brick?

Those white deposits, called efflorescence, most often come from materials touching the brick, such as mortar, concrete or soil. They show up more against darker colors, which is worth weighing if you want a brick face on your island.

Outdoor kitchen masonry in San Marcos yards

The City of San Marcos advises homeowners to limit combustible structures attached to the house, such as decks, patios and fences, and to keep plants and other fuels cleared, treated or reduced 30 to 50 feet around a home or structure to help slow a wildfire. That guidance bears on where your island sits, so we look at the spot with you and talk about keeping wood fences, overhanging trees and planting beds away from it. Block and stone don't burn, but a grill set against a wood fence or under a dry hedge is still a poor place to cook.

Plenty of backyards here sit behind a side gate, and carrying block and stone back by hand takes much more labor than unloading by machine in the driveway, so I look at the delivery route at the estimate. We see the same tight side yards on jobs in Escondido and Vista, and we work in many of the cities around San Marcos, so if yours isn't listed, just ask.
