What goes into installing a fireplace in San Marcos?
Fireplace installation in San Marcos means putting in one of three things: a brick or stone fireplace we build on site, a factory-made unit, or an insert that fits inside the fireplace you already have. You get a real fire, mostly for the look and feel and a bit of extra warmth.
Most people who call us have a wall where they've always wanted a fire, or an old open fireplace they skip because it smokes, drafts or just doesn't do much. The price mostly moves with which of the three you pick, wood or gas, how far the vent has to run, the facing around it and whether the old chimney needs chimney repair first. The schedule turns on those same things, since a hand-built firebox takes longer than setting a unit. When I come out, the estimate spells out what we'd do and why, so you can see where the money goes.
Is a new fireplace or insert right for your home?
An open fireplace you skip
An insert can turn a smoky, drafty firebox into one you'll actually light on cool nights.
A room with no fireplace
A factory-built unit or a masonry build adds a fire where your house never had one.
A remodel or room addition
With the walls already open, it's the easiest time to plan the hearth, the venting and the facing.
Moving from wood to gas
A gas unit lights with a switch and still gives you a real flame without hauling firewood.
How we handle fireplace installation
It starts with how you'll use the fire, because that decides everything else. I'll walk you through a built masonry fireplace, a factory unit and an insert, and I'll tell you plainly that a fireplace is more about the fire than about heating the house. Once you've chosen, we set the hearth base, build or frame the surround, set the unit or lay up the firebox and chimney by hand, run the venting, finish the face and clean up so the room is ready to use.
A lot of fireplace jobs touch other masonry. If you want the face or the whole chimney wall in stone, we do the stone veneer installation as part of the same job so the facing and hearth match. For a heavy hearth or an outdoor fire feature that needs a solid core, we lay it up in block the same way we build concrete block walls.
Masonry fireplace built on site
This suits you if you want a true brick or stone fireplace that's part of the house itself. It costs more than a factory unit because we build every course by hand, but it's sized and shaped for your room.
Factory-built fireplace
These lighter units are made in a factory before they're installed, and they're common in new homes across the country because they cost less than a built fireplace. We set the unit, run its vent and finish the face around it, so it can still look like masonry.
Fireplace insert
This suits a house that already has a fireplace you rarely use. The insert sits inside the old firebox and burns cleaner and more efficiently, as long as it's the right one for that fireplace and chimney.
What happens when you call about a fireplace in San Marcos?
Call or send the form
You call (760) 304-1464 or fill out the form and tell us what you have now. We get back to you and set a time for me to come out.
I look the job over
I look at the room, and the existing fireplace and chimney if there is one, and ask how you plan to use the fire. Then I write up an estimate that says what we'll do and why.
We handle paperwork and build
Once you say go, if your fireplace needs a permit, we check with the city or county office at the start and take care of the paperwork with you. Then I work on site with our crew while the fireplace gets built and vented.
Walk the finished fireplace together
When it's done, we walk the finished job with you and show you how the unit or damper works. Ask about anything you want to see before we leave.
Wood or gas for your fireplace installation?
Pick the fuel you'll really use on a weeknight.
Wood gives you the crackle and smell people picture, but it means storing firewood, cleaning out ash and keeping up with the chimney. Gas lights with a switch, and a gas unit can vent through an existing chimney or straight out through the roof or the wall behind it, which opens up spots where a chimney never fit.
I steer people toward vented gas units, because unvented models are a poor choice for the air inside your house and some places don't allow them at all. If you love a wood fire, we'll help you pick a unit that suits it, and the questions below cover burning wood here.

Why San Marcos homeowners call Signature San Marcos Concrete & Masonry for fireplaces
The owner looks and builds
I come out to look at your fireplace and write the estimate myself, then work on site with our crew while it gets built. The person who talked through the details with you is the one making sure they happen.
Licensed and insured, every job
We're licensed and insured. That matters on a job where we're opening walls and running a vent through your house.
Straight talk about heat
If an insert in your old fireplace will do the job, I'll tell you that before I'd sell you a new build. You'll hear plainly what a fireplace will and won't do for your house.

Fireplace installation questions
How much does fireplace installation cost in San Marcos?
The cost depends mostly on whether you choose an insert, a factory-built unit or a masonry fireplace we build on site, and an insert is usually the least while a full masonry build is the most. Gas or wood, how far the vent runs, the facing you pick and any chimney work also move it. I give you a written figure after seeing the room, so use the estimate form on this page to get started.
Will a fireplace heat my whole home?
No. Most traditional open fireplaces lose over 90 percent of the fire's heat up the chimney, and they pull a lot of the room's warm air out with it. Keep your furnace or other main heat and think of the fireplace as a fire to enjoy with a little extra warmth.
How do I add an insert to my existing fireplace?
You start by matching the insert to the fireplace you have. A factory-built fireplace, the kind people call zero-clearance, needs an insert designed and tested for that unit, and with a masonry chimney a certified installer has to make sure the flue liner, the chimney's inner lining, goes in correctly. Even a simpler retrofit device fitted to an old wood fireplace can cut its air pollution by about 70 percent when it's installed properly, though it still smokes more than a certified wood stove.
How often should my fireplace chimney be checked?
At least twice a year during the heating season is what one fireplace maker's manual requires, so creosote buildup gets caught early. Creosote is the tarry residue wood smoke leaves inside the flue, and your own unit's manual is the one to follow for your fireplace.
How long does fireplace installation take?
An insert is usually the quickest, a factory-built unit takes longer because of the framing, venting and finish around it, and a masonry fireplace takes the longest because we lay the firebox and chimney by hand. Chimney work and the facing you choose can add to that. I'll tell you what your schedule turns on when I look at the job.
Can I burn wood in my fireplace in San Marcos?
Yes. The San Diego County Air District doesn't currently prohibit burning in fireplaces, and its burning rule exempts recreational fires that use clean, dry wood or charcoal, natural gas or propane. If you're buying a new wood-burning unit, the EPA says to ask your local air quality agency which units may legally be installed, so check with the air district before you choose.

Work that often goes with a fireplace
Fireplace installation in San Marcos and nearby cities
We're based in San Marcos and work in many of the cities around it, so if you don't see yours listed, just ask. Living with a wood fire here means keeping an eye on smoke, because the county air district says any fire that puts out excessive smoke or odors could be treated as a public nuisance. We size the firebox and flue so the fire draws cleanly, and I'll tell you to burn dry, seasoned wood, since green wood smokes far more.
The San Marcos Fire Department says the first 5 feet around a house should be clear of anything that can burn, firewood stacks included, so we help you plan a spot for the wood rack beyond that. We plan it the same way on jobs in Escondido and Vista.
